Shades of gray : a study of personal experience with integration in America's public schools, 2004.

Discusses attitudes about racial integration of people from his parents' generation who were white students attending public schools. Discusses circumstances of racial prejudice and white supremacy in the United States prior to the 1950's. Explains that even after segregation was declared unconstitutional, many federal laws promoting integration were ignored, especially in the South. Includes stories from two regions: Northeastern states and Southeastern states. Analyzes the different value systems of each region in terms of racial prejudice and integration in the public schools. Explains that both regions are working toward racial equality.
